Tanzania Midwives Association:
Scaling Up a Vital Programme to Save Lives

THE CHALLENGE
The Tanzania Midwives Association (TMA) provided life-saving training to reduce the rate of maternal mortality, which was among the worst in the world.

How could a band of five dedicated staff members scale this up to meet UN social development goals?

WHAT WE DID
We mobilised the Association through a membership drive, so that midwives across Tanzania could be empowered to conduct effective training.  We implemented a stakeholder awareness plan that saw leaders reach out to media and influencers to focus on the impact of TAMA’s work. We created bite-size accessible training videos so that midwives in rural, remote areas could learn and share. And finally, we trained up TAMA leadership on communications, outreach, media relations,  grant-writing and KPIs.

THE RESULT

By early 2020, TAMA was getting new funding resources, had doubled its membership and secured a partnership with Tanzania’s leading music label, which now makes and distributes pro bono documentary videos about TAMA’s work.
